Fernando funeral will stop at Ibrox for fans

BY SALLY HIND RANGERS idol Fernando Ricksen’s funeral cortege will visit his beloved former club today as he makes his final journey.

Ibrox chiefs confirmed the hearse carrying the star – who died last week aged 43 after a battle with motor neurone disease – would pause at the stadium at 1pm to allow fans to pay their respects.

Rangers said: “The family would like to thank everyone who has paid their respects to Fernando over the past week.”

Thousands of fans are expected to gather at the ground and at Wellington Church on Southpark Avenue, where a service will take place at 2pm ahead of a private family service at Linn Crematoriu­m.

Rangers added : “The funeral cortege will make its way to Ibrox Stadium for 1pm, where it will stop briefly outside the stadium front door to allow fans to pay their respects from the opposite side of the road. The procession will come down Broomloan Road and proceed along Edmiston Drive, driving east before heading to the Clyde Arc Bridge and on to the church.

“The cortege will then proceed to Wellington Church for the funeral at 2pm, before a private, family service at Linn Crematoriu­m is held. Please also note that family flowers only are requested at Wellington Church.”

Former club stars including Nacho Novo and Arthur Numan are expected to attend the funeral, with Rangers chiefs covering the costs for his family. ●No cars will be allowed unless approved by police or Glasgow City Council on Edmiston Drive between Paisley Road West and Broomloan Road heading west and Edmiston Drive between Broomloan Road and Copland Road heading east from noon until 2.30pm.

Restrictio­ns were in place on Edmiston Drive from Broomloan Road and Copland Road at 3pm yesterday and will remain until 2pm today.
