Defiant Angus fires up Locos

-

CHRIS ANGUS admits he ignored the skipper’s orders before firing 10-man Inverurie Locos to third.

The prolific striker netted a double midway through the second half to kill off a stubborn Keith side.

That came after captain Neil McLean copped a second yellow for a studs-up challenge on Craig MacAskill.

And despite replacement skipper Eric Watson urging Angus to slow the game down, he put his foot on the accelerator instead.

Angus said: “My first was a goal you look for as a striker.

“Playing into the sun and down the slope, I chased a long kick out from our keeper.

“It hit the first defender on the head and I gambled. Our captain had just been sent off and I was up for it, determined to make sure we didn’t blow the points.

“For my second, I gambled again and scored on the rebound. We were down to 10 men and our replacement captain Eric Watson was shouting at me to hold the ball up. But that’s not my game, I prefer playing on the last man and Eric knows that.

“My plan worked. It was a day when it could have been a different outcome. Their heads went down after that.”

The 4-0 triumph at Harlaw Park hoisted Locos level with Brora Rangers on points, six behind leaders Buckie Thistle.

And Locos are out to defy predictions the Highland League race will be a three-way fight between Buckie, Fraserburgh and Brora.

Angus, who hit 28 goals for Buckie when they lifted the trophy three years ago, is now gunning for his former club.

He said: “Come the end of the season, the difference in three points, one or none in these games could be huge. It puts us in a good position.”

The goals all came in the second half, with Mark Souter netting soon after the break before McLean saw red.

Andy Hunter’s penalty steadied Locos before Angus’ double killed the game.

The Maroons had Michael Selfridge sent off late on for a second bookable offence.
