The animated Disney classic portrayed Maleficent as an evil fairy who put a curse on the newborn princess and foretold she would die on her 16th birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning wheel. But in the live action Maleficent in 2014 we found out that, far from being evil, the fairy has been badly treated by Aurora’s dad. She ends up raising her and it’s a her – not a prince – who gives Aurora a kiss to wake her up. With three daughters – biological children with Brad, Shiloh and Vivienne, 11, and adopted Zahara, 14 – Angelina said she is a fighter not just for her girls but for all her kids. She said: “You want your child to be safe. My willingness to fight for whatever they need to be protected – that’s me as a mom.” Her family have had some turbulent times. In 2016, reports came out that Brad was under investigation for child abuse with claims of an altercation between him and adopted son Maddox.
While he was cleared, it seemingly finished his marriage to Angelina and severed his relationship with Maddox, who is at college in South Korea studying biochemistry.
Angelina reckons most folk go into parenthood thinking they have to be perfect.
She admitted: “I did think, before I had kids, that to be a perfect mother you have to be a perfect person – and that’s not true. You have to just do your best and be willing to put your child before you.
“I love being a mom. They are my everything.”
While she’s played action heroes in films such as Lara Croft and Salt, she feels most powerful when she’s being a mum. She said: “When one of my kids calls for my help, I feel like the strongest person ever – even if it’s just to get a Band-Aid.”
The actress also feels protective of actress Elle, who was 14 when they shot the first film.
She said: “She’s family. Elle’s grown into such an extraordinary young woman through all her fame and everything she’s gone through.”
Next year, Angelina will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thena in The Eternals. The cast also includes Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden and Kit Harington.
She said: “I love it. I love doing action. “Thena is very aggressive and she’s a real fighter, so it’s been really good for me to get back to weapon training. “I fight a lot.” While the only thing we’ve seen of her role so far is a shot of her in a blonde wig, Angelina admitted her children have made sure she doesn’t feel too much of a superhero.
She joked: “You get the outfit on and you’re feeling really… you know – and then you see your kids and they look at you as if, ‘What are you doing?’
“And you get nicely brought back down to earth like, ‘You are so weird mom.’”
