Bid to find murder victim’s remains

POLICE yesterday issued a direct appeal to Margaret Fleming’s killers in a bid to find her remains.
They admitted that there are no active searches ongoing to find the body of the vulnerable woman who would have been 39 had she lived.
Detective Superintendent Paul Livingstone, senior investigating officer, said: “I would like to appeal directly to Edward Cairney and Avril Jones on what would have been Margaret’s 39th birthday.
“If you have a shred of decency, you will answer the questions Margaret’s family have to allow them to put her to rest.
“I have lodged formal requests with both lawyers, asking for information and reiterating an offer to meet me to discuss in person.
“Margaret was a very vulnerable young woman when she was abused, neglected, manipulated and murdered.”
But killers Cairney, 77, and Jones, 59, have never admitted killing Margaret, who they lived with at a rundown house in Inverkip on the Clyde coast.
She has not been seen for 20 years.
They denied murder to the bitter end of their trial earlier this year.
DS Livingstone said he is hoping members of the public will get in touch with any information. He said there have been no new searches of the River Clyde or the surrounding area near the house and that these would only resume on the basis of any new information provided.
Asked if he was in the hands of the killers in the bid to find Margaret’s body, he said: “Not necessarily.
“There could be members of the public who hold vital information. They might just not realise it.
“We need to keep this in the public focus because someone may well have information.
“I would say to them, don’t be afraid. They may have information. Let us be the judge of that. We’ll research it and review it.”
