Aird: We’re yet to show bright spark

-

FRASER AIRD delivered a couple of crackers ahead of Bonfire Night then warned rivals this Cove Rangers side are still to produce fireworks.

The winger scored in each half as a comefrom-behind 3-1 win at Cowdenbeath maintained the league’s new boys’ three-point lead at the top.

Aird rifled home after a corner slipped under Robbie Buchanan’s foot, though it shouldn’t have been a corner to begin with after Cove defender Scott Ross headed wide.

A 78th-minute piledriver clinched victory as Aird said: “We’re delighted to go up the road with three points and score three away from home.

“But we can play a lot better because the conditions were difficult and that pitch was really wet.

“For my first goal I was lucky the ball came to me when the defender missed it. After that it was just instinct. With the keeper coming out I put it high into the roof of the net.

“But for the second one Declan Glass laid it up on a tee for me.

“This was a six-pointer with them chasing us so we needed to win to bounce back from a couple of poor results.”

Cove had lost back-toback games before their midweek win over Albion Rovers and found themselves trailing 15 minutes in to David Cox’s fabulous header.

Mitch Megginson kickstarted a comeback 15 minutes later as Aird said: “It shows the character of the team and the boys in that dressing room have a real desire to go and win.

“It’s never easy coming here so we did well.”

It was a first league defeat since August 17 for Cowden and boss Gary Bollan was furious with ref John McKendrick for the corner that never was.

He said: “It’s 100 per cent a goal kick. I have watched it on the video and don’t see how it was given whatsoever.”

Meanwhile, Danny Handling made it five goals in three games as his double saw Edinburgh City sink Brechin 3-2.

Shane Sutherland has scored in six games straight as he buried one penalty and missed another in a 4-0 humbling of Annan.

Queen’s Park moved above Stenhousemuir into fifth with a 3-0 win as Stirling made it seven games unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over Albion Rovers.
