Full Monti as Carlo sinks Lok

-

CARLO MONTI dumped old club Pollok with a sensational free-kick and claimed Kilwinning are now looking up in the world.

The 1-0 win put Rangers four points clear of Irvine Meadow at the top of the West Premiership.

Monti revealed their only target at the start of the season was to avoid the drop but Kilwinning will now be setting loftier goals.

He said: “It was a terrific team performance and there was a togetherness. Everyone was backing each other up.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to stay in the league but now we have hit the 30-point mark we can set ourselves another target. We are in the mix which is great but this is a crazy league.

“It can change so quickly so everyone has their feet firmly planted in the ground.”

Monti’s winner silenced the Lok fans who were giving him pelters and that made his classy strike feel even better.

He said: “It was great to get the goal as I was receiving stick from some of the Pollok support. It’s my job to put the ball in the net and I’m delighted it turned out to be the match winner.”

Both sides had chances in the first half with Lok keeper Josh Lumsden denying Ben Lewis then Danny McKenzie shooting just wide for the Glasgow side.

Straight after the break

Buffs keeper David Marky pulled off a remarkable double save to deny Shaun Fraser then Iain Russell.

With 20 minutes left Monti stepped up and grabbed a goal worthy of winning any game when his free-kick flew into the top corner.

Pollok gaffer Murdy MacKinnon, whose side would have gone top with a win, said: “It’s a hard one to take as we were the better side but that’s football. We have to dust ourselves down and go again.”

Jubilant Buffs gaffer Chris Strain said: “My boys were brilliant and I’m more happy with the performance than the result. They gave me absolutely everything.”
