QHow many goals did Aberdeen accumulate in Europe the season they beat Real Madrid to win the Cup-Winners’ Cup and who scored them? HC.

AIn season 1982-83 they scored 25 goals on their European run. Mark McGhee was top scorer with six goals, followed by John Hewitt (5), Eric Black and Neil Simpson (3 apiece), Peter Weir (2) and singles from Stuart Kennedy, Dougie Bell, Alex Mcleish, Willie Miller and Gordon Strachan. There was also one own goal.

QJim Baxter once walked off the pitch with the ball stuffed up his jersey because he wanted to give it to a team-mate. Can you recall the match? D Morris, Falkirk.

AThis happened at the end of the Scottish Cup Final replay on May 15, 1963, when Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 with goals by Ralph Brand (2) and Davie Wilson. It seems Baxter wanted to give the match ball to team-mate Ian McMillan to mark his third success in the national trophy. The SFA ordered Rangers to return the ball and one was sent to them but whether or not it was the ball used at Hampden no one knew.

QA friend of mine, Mark Grimley, claims he used to play for Hibs and scored a hat-trick while playing for Scotland Under-21s. Do you have any details on this? Jamie Sinclair.

ANever heard of him. I think he’s pulling your leg.

QNeil Mochan was a versatile player with Celtic and wore a number of different shirts. Can you tell me how many positions he played and which one he played in most. Neil McCluskey, Cumbernauld.

AMochan played in six different positions – on both wings, left-half, insideleft, centre-forward and left-back. Outside-left was the role he took most often as it accounted for 130 of his 291 games for Celtic. He was No.3 in 79, No.9 in 46, No.10 in 27, No.6 in five and No.7 in four.

QI vaguely recall going to a match at Ibrox in the 1950s between Rangers and a British Army team featuring the late, great Duncan Edwards. Do you have match details? Davie Harwood, Glasgow.

AOn December 18, 1956, it finished Rangers 1 (Wilson), Army 3 (Little og, Curry 2) in front of 20,000 fans. Edwards and Manchester United pal Bobby Charlton, who were doing National Service together, both played. Rangers – Ritchie, Shearer, Little, McColl, Moles, Logie, McCulloch, Grierson (Melrose), Walker, Baird, Wilson. British Army – Hodgkinson (Sheff Utd), Foulkes (Man Utd), Shaw (Sheff Utd), Anderson (Sunderland), Spiers (Reading), Colman (Man Utd), Crawford (Hearts), Charlton (Man Utd), Curry (Newcastle), Edwards (Man Utd), Jones (Swansea).
