I’ll keep Glasgow gung-ho Wilson’s vow with Rennie on his way to Oz
DANNY WILSON last night promised Glasgow fans their side’s swashbuckling style won’t follow Dave Rennie out the door.
The Scotland pack guru will take over as Warriors boss when the Kiwi jets off for the Australia job at the end of the season.
The appointment was revealed hours after Rennie was named as Michael Cheika’s successor as Wallabies boss.
Wilson, who joined Gregor Townsend’s Scotland team in August 2018 after three years in charge of Cardiff Blues, said: “The opportunity to coach such an attractive club as Glasgow was too good to miss. I’ve been extremely impressed with the Scottish system in recent years and I’m looking forward to working with an exciting and talented squad of players at Scotstoun. I want to build on the high-tempo style of play I know the fans love and pay to see week in, week out.
“The club have been challenging at the top end of the Pro14 league on a regular basis and as a coach it is that type of environment and culture you want to be involved in.
“I took a huge amount of learnings from the time I have spent with Scotland through the Six Nations and World Cup. I’m thankful for that experience, which can only add to how I take on my new role with Glasgow.”
Rennie had also been in the frame for the All Blacks job.
But he insisted his attention will not slip as he steps up preparations for Saturday’s Champions Cup tie at Exeter.
He said: “My wife and I have loved our time in Scotland around great people. It’s been as good as I could have wished for after leaving New Zealand.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to coach at international level and an added bonus that we’ll be a little closer to home, near our kids and grandkids.”
Scotland will be South Africa’s first opponents since their World Cup win in a gruelling summer tour.
Toony’s troops face the Springboks on July 4 and 11 before their first clash with the All Blacks in New Zealand for 20 years. The Kiwis, Japan and Argentina will then visit Murrayfield in the Autumn Test series.
