Hardened cons feast on trendy plant-based Christmas menu

- BY JENNIFER RUSSELL

HARDMEN in Scots jails will be plant-based prisoners this Christmas.

Trendy vegan dishes with soya, couscous and butternut squash are on the menu in some of the toughest nicks.

SCOTLAND’S most notorious criminals will be able to tuck into a cruelty-free feast this Christmas.

Meals that will be served up in our toughest nicks this festive period include a range of trendy vegan dishes.

The list of festive menus was obtained by the Record through a freedom of information request.

Maximum security HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire, where gangland hitman Raymond Anderson and torture killer Colin Coates are caged, is making sure no vegan cons will feel left out.

Its Christmas Day menu includes soya fruit yogurt and Weetabix for breakfast, a mushroom couscous stuffed pepper for the main meal and apple plum tart for dessert.

An insider said: “It’s pretty laughable to think of some of Scotland’s hardest criminals tucking into mushroom couscous washed down with soya milk.

“The choice in Shotts is better than in some restaurants.”

Inmates who want something meatier can opt for lentil broth, roast chicken with gravy and all the trimmings, plus a dessert of chocolate gateau with pouring cream.

On New Year’s Day, the prison will serve winter broth with a soft roll, butternut squash and walnut tart, a vegan apple pie and a melon boat.

At HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, catering staff will be serving roast turkey with pigs in blankets, mashed potatoes, julienne carrots and Brussels sprouts for Christmas lunch. Tea will be a beef or falafel and spinach burger, with optional extras of mince pies and Irn-Bru.

Young offenders at Polmont in Stirlingshire will get a choice between turkey crown or a cauliflower vegetarian parcel for Christmas dinner. They will also be treated to a selection box with chocolates and a bottle of Irn-Bru.

At New Year, steak pie will be served in HMP Perth, Barlinnie and Polmont, with beef Wellington at HMP Greenock and homemade chicken pie at HMP Edinburgh.

The Scottish Prison Service said the festive menus are “produced within the catering budget”. A spokeswoman added: “All dietary requirements have always been catered for at all establishments.”
