NUCLEAR disaster drama Chernobyl has been voted as the best TV programme of 2019. The Sky Atlantic/HBO mini series which starred Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson and former River City hardman Alex Ferns, came top of the annual Radio Times’ Critics’ poll. It was ahead of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag and Scots actor Brian Cox’s mogul drama Succession. The rest of the list also featured BBC hits His Dark Materials, Line of Duty and Years and Years, as well as US imports such as Watchmen. In a field dominated by drama, only two comedies, Fleabag and This Time with Alan Partridge, made the list. The BBC Three UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race was the only reality series to make the top 10.

And royal drama The Crown was the only Netflix series to hit the top flight.

According to RadioTimes.com’s editorial director Tim Glanfield, Chernobyl was the clear winner.

He said: “An outstanding piece of television, the overall production, script and performances of the likes of Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, Paul Ritter and Jessie Buckley garnered the series popular acclaim plus 19 Emmy nominations – and it’s more than a worthy winner of our 2019 critics’ poll.”
