MATT’S GOT ‘EM ED OVER HEELS

Keeper sees red as Doherty snatches win

-

MATT DOHERTY bagged a late, late winner as Wolves staged a stunning comeback to blow a hole in Manchester City’s title hopes.

The champions lost keeper Ederson early on but took a two-goal lead thanks to a first-half Raheem Sterling spot-kick and a cool finish from the England man after the break.

But Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez dragged the Molineux men back in to it before Doherty drilled in a shock 89th-minute winner.

The Irish right-back said: ““It’s pretty special, to come back was unbelievable. We never give up and that sums up our form at the moment.”

And delighted boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It was a good night, a very good night. The game was fantastic. Everything changes with City with one men less but it was very good.”

The game exploded into life in the 12th minute when Ederson was sent off for rushing out of his area and bringing down Diogo Jota.

Referee Martin Atkinson had no hesitation in producing red and sub keeper Claudio Bravo came on, with Sergio Aguero having to make way.

The replacement keeper’s first job was to save from Joao Moutinho’s subsequent free-kick.

Atkinson turned to VAR which showed Dendoncker had pulled back Mahrez by his shoulder and trodden on his foot.

Sterling took the resulting penalty but Rui Patricio got down well to his right to make a save. VAR showed the keeper was off his line and Coady had encroached. Sterling retook the spotkick and Patricio saved in near identical fashion but this time the ball rebounded straight to the City forward to tap in.

Kevin de Bruyne released Sterling down the middle and he lofted the ball over Patricio in the 50th minute to double City’s advantage.

Traore set up a grandstand finish five minutes later when he halved the arrears with a low drive.

Then with eight minutes left City cracked when Benjamin Mendy failed to clear his lines and Traore nicked the ball before crossing for Jimenez to net.

The visitors were rattled and the game was gone when Doherty danced through the defence and played a one-two with Jimenez and fired home.

Gutted City gaffer Pep Guardiola, whose side are now third and 14 points off the top, said: “It’s unrealistic to think about catching Liverpool. In 48 hours we have another game.

“We could not defend it at the end, they fought incredible, ran until the last minute. The goals could have
