Either way – we plan on going up

DUNDEE 0 INVERNESSCT 2

- BY SCOTT BURNS

JAMES KEATINGS has insisted promotion is the main 2020 aim for Inverness – and they haven’t given up on the title race either.

Caley Thistle’s impressive win over Dundee put them four points clear in second place. And the Highlanders haven’t given up hope of chasing down United who are 14 points ahead at the Championship summit.

Keatings said: “In this league anything can happen, teams can have a strong lead but then lose a lot of points.

“Promotion is our aim either way. We either want to stay second or close the gap, just get as many points as we can. We have to think positive and believe we have a good enough squad to go up.”

Caley Thistle’s 1-0 defeat at Arbroath cost them the chance to cut United’s lead and Keatings thinks they showed the perfect response at

Dens Park. He said: “We showed our character, we worked hard and limited Dundee’s chances. We managed to take our chances as well.

“You could hear the boos at halftime and we said in the changing room we’d got them on their back foot now. We then just sat in a wee bit and soaked it up. We were disciplined and I don’t think we felt we were going to concede.”

A superb pass from Kevin McHattie picked out Shaun Rooney who crossed for Aaron Doran to smash in the opener.

Keatings then killed the game. Rooney burst forward again and found the striker who forced his way past Jordan Marshall, ran on and slotted low past Jack Hamilton.

Dundee slumped to fourth, a massive 20 points behind United.

They were booed off the pitch and defender Jordan McGhee said: “It’s devastating. Going from the high of four games without defeat to that is not good enough.

“Everyone knows they have to shoulder a lot of the criticism and take the pressure in every game.”
