Everything is in place for us to achieve what we want to

GOLFERS have an entire glossary for every kind of scenario on the course.

There’s the Adolf Hitler (took two shots in the bunker), there’s the Dennis Wise (a nasty little five footer), needing a Gerry Adams (provisional) and the Arthur Scargill (great strike but poor result).

There’s also the sister-in-law (up there but shouldn’t be) and that’s Motherwell at the moment. They’ve been duffing and shanking their way through 2020 yet somehow managed to find the green and remain hogging third spot in the Premiership.

Well were straight down the middle before the New Year but Stephen Robinson’s men have picked up just five points from 21 since the winter break and tumbled out of the Scottish Cup on penalties to St Mirren.

Saints sucker punched them again on Tuesday night with a late winner at Fir Park which has left everyone associated

BY MICHAEL GANNON with the Steelmen pondering two big questions.

What the heck has happened? And how the heck are we still up there?

The second one is easier to answer as rivals Aberdeen have stalled with just one league win so far this year. It’s harder to pinpoint why the wheels have come off at Well and it’s proving equally as puzzling for the men on the course.

Striker Tony Watt only arrived a few weeks ago and has yet to pick up a win bonus.

But he’s convinced it won’t take long for the Steelmen to get out of their funk.

Watt said: “I have played in five games and haven’t won, although the other night was only the second one we’ve lost.

“It’s not good enough because I want to be winning games. I thought we showed signs in bits of the game but we’re not sealing the deal and doing enough to win games.

“It doesn’t seem that people are low but we have to fight through it and get going again.

“We are not a bad team, we’re a good side and we’re third in the league.

“We need to start picking up wins and the quality is there.

“Everything is in place for us to achieve what we want to,we just have to start getting wins.”

Watt is determined to play his part. He got off the mark for Well in the epic 4-4 Scottish Cup penalty shoot-out loss to St Mirren and is keen to get up and running in the league.

It won’t be for the want of trying if he doesn’t.

The former Celtic kid said: “The club has been perfect and I couldn’t ask for any more.

“The manager’s been unbelievable for me, I can’t thank him highly enough because he has given me confidence and belief. The quality is there in the team, we have the players there and the talent.

“But we need to stop talking about it and start doing it.

“I’m the same, I need to start doing it – or I won’t be playing.

“I need to show I deserve to be in the team.

“I didn’t expect to play as much as I have but the gaffer has needed me.

“I told him I’d run through a brick wall for him and will continue to do that whenever he asks me to play.

“As long as I’m called upon I’ll run as hard and as fast as I can.”

The return of David Turnbull could provide the spark that Motherwell need. The midfielder has suffered a miserable run of luck after his £3million move to Celtic broke down in the medical and the repair work ruled him out for eight months. The talented kid came off the bench on Tuesday and Watt believes that he can make the difference for Well. He said: “David is a quality player and is on a different level from other young players in the country. “It was unfortunate for him that he never got his move last season but it’s fortunate for us because he’s going to be a big player between now and the end of the season. “He will be a real asset. He has a big future in the game and hopefully he can help steer us to third place. “But it won’t be all about him, everyone needs to play their part.” And if not Motherwell could be going for a golfing Ryanair – ending up miles from where they want to be.
