I WON’T LET MY OLD PAL MUSCLE US OUT OF A WIN

Meekings ready for Wighton workout

- SCOTT BURNS

JOSH MEEKINGS and Craig Wighton became gym buddies through the dark days of injury.

But the stopper’s determined his former team-mate won’t be muscling in on Dundee’s play-off bid today.

The pair were at Dens Park together and helped each other through some tough times as they battled back from serious knee injuries before Wighton moved on to Hearts and was sent on loan to Gayfield.

Meekings said: “I get on with him really well and Craig has been a good signing for Arbroath. It was a big statement from them.

“When we were doing our rehab together, he had never really worked in the gym before. “But when he came back everyone was like, ‘Wow! Look at the size of him!’ “That showed how hard he worked. It can be a dark time when you are injured but he has come back from that. It will be interesting to see him at the weekend.” Arbroath have been one of the second tier’s stories of the season and are just one place off the play-offs. Meekings said: “It has been a good season for them and I don’t see them coming off the rails or anything. They are

where they are for a reason. They have done really well this season. They have made it very difficult at their place and when they go away they are just as good.

“So we have to be ready but that’s the same with any team in this league. We have found out how tough it is.

“It’s about us taking care of our own business now and if we do that we should get the points.”

Dundee’s campaign has been something of a rollercoaster but they finally seem to be hitting form – and it hasn’t come soon enough.

But regardless of past displays, Meekings knows they need to keep that consistency going into the business end of the season.

He said: “We’ve done it before where we have got a few results and then have had a poor spell so we need to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

“That has to be in the back of our minds and we have to make sure we are ready.

“I have always said that the training and the intensity has been good within the squad but it’s just about doing it on the pitch.

“We have done that the last few weeks. They may not have been perfect performances but they are the gritty ones you need if you want to go where we want to go.

“So it has been good and we just have to make sure there is nothing silly in the upcoming games and we keep this going.

“I do believe we are in a better place and are moving forward but we have to keep that going.

“We can’t afford to collapse or lose momentum and that’s on us – it’s on our shoulders.

“We’re not where we wanted to be at the start of the season but to get where we want to go now, we have to push on and finish strongly.”
