Girls Aloud Nicola: Stalker hell left me needing therapy

Star on ‘saving herself’ and being the Bee

- BY MARK JEFFERIES

NICOLA Roberts has told how she needed a year of therapy to “save” herself after being stalked by her ex-boyfriend.

Carl Davies was given a 15-month prison sentence in 2017, suspended for two years, and a lifetime restraining order after he admitted stalking the former Girls Aloud singer.

Nicola’s relationship problems had gone on for years and she then turned to a therapist to help her regain self-respect. She said: “You’ve got to be your own best friend.

“I had a year of therapy and, I swear to God, I went in that with a certain level of self-love but not enough to keep me out of bad relationships, not enough to try and save people who were toxic for me, not enough to recognise when something was bad, to walk away.

“But I left that year with the most almighty amount of self-love and self-respect – and that comes before everything, every relationship, every friendship, everything and your relationship with yourself.”

Speaking on the Castaway podcast, 34-yearold Nicola also told how she almost didn’t enter ITV’s hit The Masked Singer, which she won as Queen Bee in February, after initially

ORDEAL With her ex, Carl Davies not bothering to read the offer to perform. She said: “The email came in and I didn’t even look at it at first. “Then, I think it was two weeks later, my manager was like, ‘Can I get an answer on this? I need to say yes or no, they’re chasing me.’ I was like, ‘Let me read it again.’ “Then I looked at it and I was like, ‘OK, I love the idea. It felt like 10 to 15 years ago. The prospect was that families sit down all in a room, and they’re not on their phones and they’re guessing who this person is. I liked the family aspect of it and bringing people together for a TV show – it felt wholesome and fun. “I loved it. I honestly just love to sing all those massive songs and have fun with it and it being a game and no one knowing it’s you… And the amount of people that buy me bee things now.” ●The interview is on the latest episode of the Castaway podcast with Laura Whitmore.
