5 THINGS TO DO

-

LEARN HOW TO ORIENTEER Although we’re not able to stray far from our doorsteps right now, we could still use this time to develop a new skill such as orienteering.

An exciting outdoor adventure sport, it involves walking or running while navigating around a course using a detailed map and sometimes a compass. The aim is to navigate between a set of points and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.

To start, you could use your garden to practise. Even get the children to design the route. For advice, see www. britishorienteering.org.uk.

LEARN HOW TO SOW SEEDS IN POTS Spring is the peak season to sow seeds and keen vegetable gardener Aaron Bertelsen sets out his recommendations for the best way to go about it in his book Grow Fruit & Vegetables In Pots, published by Phaidon, which is available from most online book retailers.

LEARN HOW TO SPOT A WEED Not green fingered? Always worried about pulling up a flower instead of a weed? Well, now could be the perfect time to get into your garden and learn what exactly the difference is between a weed and a flower or plant.

There are many places online, including YouTube, offering tips and advice. And by the end of this, you could have the perfect-looking garden.

LEARN TO HAMMER A NAIL PROPERLY Do your nails end up bent when you hammer them? Ever finished up with a bruised thumb by missing the nail completely?

Well, why not take this time to learn how to hammer a nail the right way and save yourself any further injuries in the future?

Head over to YouTube for lots of video tutorials and start getting those odd jobs done!

LEARN TO BIRD WATCH In these times of increasing uncertainty, one thing that never stops is nature.

Spring is the perfect time to get out into your garden and see which birds are visiting.

If you don’t have a garden you can still get involved – all you need is a window to watch the sky.

If you can hang a bird table or feeder it could make all the difference.

Bird Watching magazine has lots of helpful ideas at birdwatching.co.uk
