EARLY BEATLES SNAP FOUND ON ANNIVERSARY
A PREVIOUSLY unpublished photograph of the trio who became The Beatles has emerged on the 50th anniversary of the band’s break-up.
The photo of The Quarrymen shows 19-year-old John Lennon, Paul McCartney, 17, and George Harrison, 16, playing guitars in a Liverpool house a year before they morphed into The Beatles.
The image was uncovered by memorabilia specialists Tracks Ltd but it is unclear who captured the moment on camera and when, although it is thought to be in late 1959.
Lennon formed the skiffle and rock’n’roll group in 1956 and he and McCartney first met in July 1957 when The Quarrymen played at a church fete.
Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn said: “There are few Quarrymen photos and a discovery such as this is extremely rare.”
It was 50 years ago today that our sister paper the Daily Mirror told the world that McCartney had quit The Beatles.
