ORDINARY LOVE IN RECENT times, Liam Neeson has been playing the revenge dad in films like Taken – but this movie shows his acting chops.
In an intimate drama, he stars as Tom who, along with his wife Joan (Lesley Manville), has slowly come to terms with the death of their daughter Debbie.
They have settled into (CERT 12) ◆◆◆◆ a routine under a cloud of grief, making regular pilgrimages to the grave and keeping fit by walking side by side along a busy road.
In the shower after one stroll, Joan feels a lump in her left breast and is later diagnosed with cancer.
This cruel blow causes the marriage to buckle but earthy humour cuts through the sombre self-reflection.
The actors’ on-screen chemistry compels us to stand hopefully beside the long-time lovebirds through chemotherapy and the inevitable squabbles borne of crippling fear and frustration.
