GROCERY prices are going up while supermarkets ditch special offers – so it’s no wonder millions of families are feeling the financial pinch at the checkout.
Supermarkets have ditched popular promotions such as buy one, get one free, to ensure that shelves are not stripped bare. But parents are feeling the squeeze with prices increasing by 3.1 per cent.
Figures from market analysts at Kantar reveal in February, 31 per cent of sales were promotionbased. This dropped to 25 per cent in April, and then to 17 per cent in May due to the number of offers being slashed.
Meanwhile, workers have suffered wage cuts and redundancy due to coronavirus, about 1.8million householders have taken a mortgage holiday and 1.5million have taken a credit card and personal loan holiday.
Citizens Advice tells us that 11million people are struggling to keep on top of household bills and have either missed or will fail to make a payment soon on rent, council tax, mobile phones and broadband bills.
