Sutton: Lenny player award was sur-prize

-

CHRIS sutton has recalled the jaw-dropping moment neil Lennon won the club’s Player of the Year award over Henrik Larsson.

His tell-all comes after Jeremie Frimpong trumped odsonne Edouard, Mikey Johnston and Kris Ajer to win Young Player of the Year in a fan vote.

Edouard is up for the big prize, which could explain how the right-back managed to pip the man many regard as the best player in scottish football.

But the Record Sport columnist was still surprised the French striker isn’t on for a double whammy.

And it reminded him of an awards night when he was playing in the Hoops.

speaking on the record Celtic Podcast, sutton said: “i’m a big fan of Frimpong but i didn’t understand, how did Edouard not win that award?

“i like Frimpong, he’s a great player, great on the telly, speaks from the heart but come on? Edouard ...

“We all used to be embarrassed when Henrik was at the club and we used to go to the Player of the Year awards and somebody else got it. Lenny won it once and we’re all sitting there at our tables and Lenny’s up there making a speech and talking about himself for 25 minutes.

“And we’re all thinking, ‘How the f*** has he won that?’. Henrik’s scored about 85 goals with 15 assists, we’re all sitting there and our jaws are all hitting the floor.

“Personal accolades are important and when you get home it’s good to boast to your kids and missus about it but nah, most players play a straight bat with that, other than Lenny.”
