WE’VE HELPED TO DELIVER 3k FOOD PARCELS

FARE effort to provide 76,000 meals to young people and their families

-

FARE is a community development organisation based in Easterhouse, Glasgow, and has staff like us working in schools across the city. We’re both based at Knightswood Secondary School and normally work Monday to Friday, giving group and one-toone support to young people and their families in relation to school and home life. On top of their teaching responsibilities, secondary school staff, FARE staff and a member of the school chaplaincy team have volunteered to pack and deliver food parcels to our associated families since the start of lockdown. That’s happening in various schools across Glasgow. The food parcel funding is provided by FARE, which will allow us to provide essential provisions to families until August.

We’ve been really lucky to have volunteers from SSE to help with packing and deliveries, and we’ve recruited more volunteers to assist with packing. We couldn’t have done this without them.

Weronika liaises with the families to find out what they need weekly, and I co-ordinate the deliveries.

The school canteen has become a production hub to keep getting food parcels out to the people who desperately need basic supplies during lockdown – the demand has grown week by week.

So far, the total number of parcels packed and delivered to families in the west of the city from Knightswood Secondary School alone is 3196, which means the total number of meals delivered is 76,704. Food parcels should provide food and resources for a family of four for two or three days.

We both love our jobs, and we’re really happy that we’ve still been able to work helping the young people and their families during lockdown.

Weronika gets lovely messages from the families saying how much they appreciate it. When we look back at this, we’ll both be happy that we could do this to help. ●Donate to FARE’s Covid-19 appeal at justgiving.com/fundraising/fare ●As told to Elaine Livingstone, in line with social distancing guidelines.
