Brave triplet Caleb,4, in bid for fresh chance at life

- BY SALLY HIND

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy given just months to live after his rare brain cancer returned is to begin a clinical trial to give him another chance at life.

Triplet Caleb Stirrat, from Clydebank, appeared to have beaten the aggressive tumour he was diagnosed with last year after travelling to the US for proton beam therapy.

But his parents Karen, 35, and Andy, 43, were left shattered when MRI scans last month revealed the cancer had returned and was terminal.

They have sought a second opinion and found an oncologist in Manchester who, with the backing of medics in Glasgow, will put Caleb on a new drug trial after an eight-hour operation to remove the tumour next week.

The family said they hope the treatment will shrink the tumour again or give them more precious time with their son.

In a message to supporters, they said: “Since getting the devastating news last week that Caleb only had four months to live, through tears and sleepless nights we decided to fight for a second opinion.

“Caleb has been deteriorating quite rapidly and this would give him the best possible chance.

They said Caleb may not make it out of theatre but added: “If we didn’t take the chance we’d never forgive ourselves.”

Karen told the Record: “He has been in a lot of pain but we’re hoping surgery will alleviate that.”

After the news Caleb’s condition was terminal, supporters raised almost £12,000 so the family could do all the things Caleb had dreamed of in the time he has left.
