Aspooky mansion, a sinister death and eerie supernatural events all conjure up a great psychological thriller.

This four-part drama set in Northern Ireland stars Emmett J Scanlan as handsome university lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan.

He’s married to successful author Roisin (Catherine Walker), but he soon embarks on an affair with one of his students, Ophelia Marsh, who is played by Emily Reid.

Emmett, who was in Hollyoaks and Peaky Blinders, said: “Michael is intelligent, confident and has his students eating out of his hands.

“He seduces people in general and is used to getting what he wants. He loves the danger of it.”

Ophelia falls pregnant but is puzzled when Dr Callaghan vanishes. She tracks him down in Knockdara, Ireland, where he’s attending his wife Roisin’s funeral.

Emmett said: “Michael claims that Roisin died in an accidental fire at her family’s creepy old home.

“They have an argument and Michael leaves to go to

the pub. Roisin is drunk and falls asleep with a lit cigarette in her hands.

The house goes up in flames – but was it an accident?”

Ophelia grows suspicious of her charming lover when it transpires he’s a wannabe novelist who resented Roisin’s popularity. Emmett said: “Michael finds Roisin’s success difficult to handle, because he’s not used to playing second fiddle – it eats away at him. “That jealousy manifests itself in destructive ways. Michael is complicated, dangerous and there’s a lot more going on under the surface than he cares to show.”

There are also elements of a ghost story, as Ophelia is haunted by ghostly apparitions and a strange knocking sound coming from a locked room.

“If you’re looking for suspense, horror and mystery then you’ve come to the right place,” said Emmett. “That house was definitely spooky to film in, but the only spirits we saw were gin, vodka and maybe some whiskey.”
