ROSS: COUNT ON ME AGAIN

- SCOTT BURNS

ROSS COUNTY star Ross Stewart is out to prove he is no one-season wonder in the Premiership.

The big striker got the Staggies up and running with his penalty winner in Monday night’s 1-0 defeat of Motherwell.

Stewart put on a manof-the-match performance and has set his sights on surpassing last season’s 11-goal league haul.

That total was despite the hitman missing more than five months with a hamstring injury before the campaign’s premature end.

The in-demand striker said: “I always put pressure on myself to do well. Coming off a pretty good season last year, there are going to be a lot of people saying, ‘Can he do it again?’.

“I will certainly give it my all every time I cross that white line. It was great to get a goal in the first game of the season.

“Hopefully I can build on that and get some more.

“As long as the team is winning I will be happy.”

County boss Stuart Kettlewell made it a top priority to sort out the leakiest defence in the league last season. His team did that against Well, allowing Stewart to walk away as the hero.

They’ll now be looking to keep it up when they travel to Hamilton this weekend, looking to make it a Lanarkshire double.

Stewart said: “It’s a great start for us. We’ve got to use it now and build on it come Saturday.

“Credit goes to the back four but more importantly to the team. That was something we had pointed out that we wanted to build on from last season.

“We got the shutout and the 1-0 victory. Hopefully there are plenty more.”
