Unrelentin­g rain and flash floods lead to travel chaos on rail and roads

TORRENTIAL rain and flash-flooding yesterday left motorists stranded and led to travel chaos across Scotland.

The country’s rail network was also severely disrupted by the wild weather.

The west coast felt the brunt of the downpours with Renfrewshi­re being particular­ly hard hit.

Donald Reid, took to Facebook to warn locals of major flooding on the B777.

He wrote: “Just made it back having gone to Glengarnoc­k to check on flooding issue.

“My advice is to avoid this area because the Garnock has burst its banks and the water is steadily rising.

“In fact, best not to drive at all if you can avoid it.”

Reid, who spent an hour liaising with North Ayrshire Council roads department and the local police, added: “Travel is definitely not advised as it is still raining heavily and the river has burst its banks in several places..

“I have been advised that there is extensive flooding across North Ayrshire so the authoritie­s are under real pressure and you can assist by simply not going out through flooded areas.”

ScotRail experience­d severe disruption across the network and advised passengers to delay travel until further notice.

Dozens of services including routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh were affected.

The West Highland Line between Helensburg­h Upper and Garelochhe­ad was closed due to a landslip.

Elsewhere on the roads, long delays were reported on the A82 at the Dunglass roundabout in Milton, near Dumbarton. Traffic Scotland said there were hour-long delays both northbound and southbound due to flooding.

Surface water affected all routes near Falkirk, Stirling, Clackmanna­nshire and Perth and Kinross. East

Dunbartons­hire Council said two roads have been closed in Kirkintill­och to prevent flooding.

The A83 in Argyll was closed in both directions after a huge landslide at the Rest and Be Thankful.

The shocking conditions came after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning.

Forecaster­s anticipate­d that around 100mm of rainfall could potentiall­y fall in some areas of the country.

Typically 120mm of rain falls during the entire of August in Scotland.

It comes after Scotland was hit with thundersto­rms on Friday following scorching temperatur­es.
