Lawyer demands inquiry
LAWYER Aamer Anwar said it was clear from the failings of the SPS and NHS that Darren’s death was entirely preventable.
He has now written to the Lord Advocate, Police Scotland and the Scottish Government to demand a full criminal and Health and Safety investigation into Darren’s death, to establish whether there are grounds for a prosecution for corporate homicide.
Anwar said: “His treatment was inhumane. The family of Darren Brownlie had a right to expect the Scottish Prison Service, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Scottish Ambulance Service to look after him safely but they all failed in their duty of care.
“For far too long, the Scottish Prison Service as

Low Moss prison well as the QEUH have escaped any sanction in the courts.
“If Darren’s family can access the whole truth, they will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that lessons can be learned from his tragic death which may make our prisons a safer place in which to be.”
The questions Anwar has raised include:
● Why did Darren not receive timeous pre-hospital treatment for his blood loss and why was he not transferred to hospital for surgery immediately?
● Why was no CPR administered by prison officers when they were unable to summon nurses to assist?
● Why was the call for an emergency ambulance graded at “yellow”, the lowest coding?
● Is there CCTV covering the cell area where Darren was attacked as well as the observation cell where he was held?
● Has any disciplinary action has been taken by the SPS against the officer who told Darren to stop buzzing for help?
