Robbo demands Fir Park fast starters

STEPHEN ROBINSON has challenged his Motherwell players to come flying out of the traps after their sluggish start to the Premiership season.

Well began the campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Ross County and the Fir Park boss Robinson knows his young side were punished for not being at it early.

Robbo said: “We’ve got two tough games coming up and if we start the game like we did it will be two hard games. If we play like we did for 60 minutes then we’ll be okay.

“Mentality-wise, as a young squad we need to make sure we start on the front foot and take positive decisions.

“At our first three throwins it was like we’d never worked on one before as we threw it straight to them. So a little bit of immaturity was in our play, instead of playing in their half of the pitch early on.

“We’ve got to learn that if you create that amount of chances you’ve got to come out with something from the game.

“There were a lot of positives but we started the game poorly, for the first 20 minutes expecting we were going to be a good side, we’ll just come and pass the ball. But we didn’t do the basics right.

“We didn’t stay with runners, we didn’t match their desire.

“After they scored the penalty we dominated and some of the football was excellent, very good stuff.

“It’s a very disappointing result but there were a lot of good things.

“David Turnbull’s first 70odd minutes for a long time was very good, Sherwin Seedorf when he came on was very good and Callum Lang looked great until the red card. But ultimately if you don’t take your chances you won’t win matches.

“But if we keep creating chances we’re going to score goals. We won’t change our style of play.

“We won’t start humping the ball up long as it doesn’t suit what we do.”
