I WANT IBROX GOALTOMAKE UP FOR SITTER

-

CONOR McCARTHY is desperate to score at Ibrox this weekend to make up for the sitter he missed on his last visit.

The defender made his St Mirren league debut against Rangers in January and should have earned the Buddies a point only to screw a late header wide.

And McCarthy said: “My biggest memory from playing Rangers was missing an absolute sitter of a header after about 70 minutes!

“It still kind of plays on my mind whenever I think of Ibrox. I should have scored that one, definitely. And I soon realised that whenever you get a chance against either of the Old Firm you have to take it.

“If I do get a chance on Sunday I’ll definitely try to grab it with both hands to make up for that one.

“But I’m really looking forward to going back there. And the fact there will be no fans in the ground probably gives us as the away side a bit of an advantage.

“People have said your mind could sway with no supporters in the ground but against Rangers or

Celtic you need to be fully concentrated for the whole game. You can’t switch off for a second.”

Jermain Defoe was the matchwinner for Rangers last time but McCarthy could find himself up against Alfredo Morelos – if the Colombian is still at the club by then.

The Irish centre-back added: “It was great to play against Defoe on my league debut. And if Morelos plays on Sunday I’ll look forward to that.

“He’s reportedly worth £20million so the chance to test yourself against someone of his quality will be brilliant.

“The whole country knows what he can do when he’s on form so we’re expecting a tough game.”

McCarthy is the longest-serving player in a new-look defence despite only arriving in Paisley seven months ago. He added: “It’s hard to believe as I’m still getting used to my surroundings myself.

“But the new players are all leaders and good communicators. And we just gelled right away in our first game together.”
