Vigurs says County are united on pitch

- BY SCOTT BURNS

IAIN VIGURS has warned Kilmarnock will need to be clinical to burst Ross County’s early-season bubble.

Tonight’s card is two fixtures short after sporting bubbles at Aberdeen and Celtic were compromised by player breaches. But Staggies skipper Vigurs insists no one in Dingwall will jeopardise the Premiership’s return as he declared himself happy for the Killie clash to go ahead. County can make it three wins from three tonight before Dundee United visit in three days’ time. Three of their first four games are at home and Vigurs knows they need to capitalise after seeing off Motherwell and Hamilton. He said: “All it is, is a good start. We haven’t done or won anything. It has just been two assured performances and two clean sheets. We just need to keep that going.

“We had a good start last season then Livingston came here and we got trounced.

“This season we look a lot more solid and there is a good unity amongst the group.

“Confidence is really high and we need to keep that going against Kilmarnock, who are well drilled and a good side.

“We start with three home games in our first four and for any club that is massive. It is something we know we need to jump on.”

Vigurs was on Monday night’s Zoom call in which the government’s national clinical director Jason Leitch laid down the law on Covid-19 guidelines.

The midfielder said: “The boys know what needs to be done. They are no daft and we are pretty much self-isolating up here in the Highlands anyway. Once we leave the stadium or training, it is in the player’s hands what they do.

“To punish a club with what a player has done is probably not fair, is it? To punish individuals makes more sense.

“It is better to punish one than a whole club when a whole club doesn’t have control outside of the stadium. I know up here the players and club have done everything right and we want to keep that up.”

Celtic full-back Boli Bolingoli went to Spain last week and failed to self-isolate on return.

The Hoops confirmed all players and backroom staff have since been tested twice and returned negative results.

Bolingoli came off the bench at Killie on Sunday but Vigurs said: “They deem it is acceptable to play the game so they feel there is no risk for this game. We just have to listen to them.

“He hasn’t tested positive and I can’t see there being any risk at all because all the Kilmarnock players, like ourselves, are tested. We are not worried. We have trust every club is following the guidelines.”

Killie are chasing a second win in Dingwall in seven trips and boss Alex Dyer said: “They are a confident bunch – they’ve won two games – but we have to try to get the points.”
