Avoidable mess

IN AN unprecedented year, there was no right or wrong answer – it just had to be fair and reasonable.

Due time was spent and consideration given, a system established, reviewed and, once satisfied, it was authorised for this year’s virtual exam results.

But once implemented, it was not seen as fair and reasonable by others.

Was the corrected system better? It only partially redressed the bias against less fortunate schools, still upholding the upgraded results given to thousands of students at better-performing schools.

The very high percentage of passes has now devalued this year’s results.

Saying sorry does not absolve responsibility. This has been, and is, a mess of the Scottish Government’s making.

Like the SPFL before them, they were unable to come up with a simple and fair way to deal with games not played or exams not sat. C.C., Balloch, Dunbartonshire

The bigger picture

RE: comments by reader David Provan, the difference between a refugee and an illegal immigrant is the documentation required.

How do you expect someone whose house has been obliterated by our bombs or are fleeing from tyrants or Isis to have the proper documentation? Do people not realise how crucial immigrants are to the running of the UK and that the NHS would have collapsed during this pandemic if it were not for the immigrants that are working in it?

Compassion seems to be becoming obsolete. Peter Krykant, Stirlingshire
