I CAN TURN OUR SEASON AROUND

Fit-again David wants to get Well off the sick list

MOTHERWELL may have stalled on the starting grid this season but David Turnbull has vowed to get the Steelmen motoring again.

The midfielder grabbed his first goal in 15 months in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Livingston to take another huge step on his road back to full fitness.

Turnbull is determined to rebuild his career after the rug was pulled from under him in the summer of 2019 as a £3million move to Celtic collapsed after the medical showed a knee problem.

Surgery, rehab and the pandemic saw more than a year go down the tubes but Turnbull is back in business and in the mood to make up for lost time.

His slick midweek strike – his first since May 2019, also against Livi – was another sign the 20-year-old is ready to move through the gears.

Turnbull said: “I am absolutely buzzing to be off the mark and get my first goal especially after so long.

“That’s the first three games I’ve played in 15 months or something like that, so I’m absolutely delighted. Now I’m hoping to kick on and get more and help the team out.

“I am feeling very fit. I returned after lockdown and was back into training and now I feel I’m getting back up to speed. The gaffer has given me a chance and I feel I have done well in the first three games.

“I would say I am 100 per cent now. I’m starting every game and playing 80 to 90 minutes in those games and I feel like I could keep going. I have never felt better, to be honest.

“Those are the moments that you want to get back to after all the hard work and all the stuff you go through. Back to doing what you do best and scoring goals. I’m delighted.”

Turnbull might have been buzzing after the Livi game but Stephen Robinson was angry as two more points were dropped and he accused some of his squad of going through the motions.

Well have picked up just one point from their opening three games and the gaffer read the riot act.

Turnbull said: “Yeah, he wasn’t happy and he had a wee pop at some of the boys. He was probably right enough.

“The results have been bad but that will just spur boys on to work harder and play better so that’s good for us.

“Is there complacency? Definitely not. The gaffer tells us every day we need to be on it and in the first few games we have played really well but we’ve just struggled to get the results.

“The draw with Livi was a tough one to take. We knew what they were going to come and do and we knew we would need to match that.

“Once we got the goals I felt that was when we tried to get the ball down and do the stuff we are good at. The goals came but we lost two sloppy ones.

“I still feel we are playing well, passing well and battling well. We just need to keep doing that and the results will come. That’s us now off the mark and I’m sure it wont take too long to get a win. We will continue to push and we will get there in the end.”
