‘Chaos, division and an utter lack of empathy’
Michelle Obama rips into Trump as she backs Biden
MICHELLE Obama has accused Donald Trump of offering only “chaos, division and a total lack of empathy” instead of leadership and stability at a time of global crisis.
The former first lady named the US president only once in her blistering attack but made it clear who she was talking about as she urged voters to oust him from the White House on November 3.
She said: “If you think things cannot possibly get worse – they can, and they will if we don’t make a change in this election.
“He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”
This was a swipe at Trump’s comments on the US coronavirus death toll, which has topped 170,000.
Obama was supporting Joe Biden, former vice president to her husband Barack Obama, at the opening of the virtual Democratic National Convention.
She added: “Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division and a total and utter lack of empathy.
“We know that what’s going on in this country is just not right.”
She said Trump will do all he can to stay in power and the only way to stop him is to vote him out in overwhelming numbers.
She added: “We’ve got to be willing to stand in line all night [to vote] if we have to. We have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it.”
Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran against Biden for the Democratic nomination, went further when he backed his former rival.
Referring to his Jewish family’s experience in the Holocaust, he said: “Under this administration, authoritarianism has taken root in our country. I, and my family, and many of yours, know the insidious way authoritarianism destroys democracy, decency and humanity. As long as I am here, I will work to preserve this nation from a threat that so many of our heroes fought and died to defeat.”
Also appearing were Republicans who said they could not stand by and watch Trump destroy America.
Kristin Urquiza, daughter of Trump voter Mark from Arizona who lost his life to Covid-19 in June, said: “His only pre-existing condition was trusting Trump and for that he paid with his life.”
Trump tweeted: “Somebody, please explain to Michelle Obama that Donald J Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren’t for the job done by your husband.
“My administration and I built the greatest economy in history... turned it off, saved millions of lives and now am building an even greater economy.”
Trump has repeatedly taken credit for building the US economy when its growth began well into Obama’s term in office.
