Cops take close look at torching
POLICE believe the torching of murder victim Graham Williamson’s car is linked to his execution.
A major investigation was launched after Graham, known as Kermit, was gunned down outside his home on Monday as his burnt-out car was being towed away.
Speaking yesterday at the scene of the targeted attack in Caithness Street, Blantyre, Detective Superintendent Kevin Jamieson said: “I’m keeping an open mind in terms of the motive as to why Graham was killed.
“One of the lines of inquiry we are looking at is the targeted fire-raising of his car, which was reported to police on August 13, but it is too early at this stage to identify a clear motive.”
Police also said they believe the young dad’s killer fled the scene in a dark blue car.
Jamieson added: “What we do know is there was a dark blue motor vehicle in the street, which the person involved in the incident had been in.
“After the shooting, the car then drove off at speed down Caithness Street and into the surrounding streets.
“Officers are checking CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses. However, we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have any information that will assist their inquiry.”
He said it was crucial for witnesses to come forward to “bring this incident to a swift conclusion for Graham’s family’s sake and for local residents”.
Jamieson refused to comment when asked if Kermit was known to police.
He said: “Graham was hard-working. He was a father, a partner and a son, and his family are clearly devastated by what’s happened to him.
“At this stage we don’t know why Graham was targeted, but what I do know is he didn’t deserve this to happen.”
Shocked residents told how people tried to help Kermit after the shooting.
One woman said her neighbour saw Kermit fall to the ground after hearing shots, adding: “She quickly ran down and the tow truck driver was already trying to resuscitate him.
“We all tried our best to save him. We had towels trying to stop the bleeding.”
Officers remain in the area and members of the public are encouraged to speak to them should they have any concerns or information.
