Knife attacker stabs James Bain as he gets home from night out

- BY JANE HAMILTON

THE dad of a notorious gun killer was targeted in an attempted murder bid on his own doorstep.

James Bain, father of Marmion pub shooter Jamie, was stabbed as he got home from a night out.

Bain, 55, suffered severe internal injuries from the attack in the early hours of Saturday morning at his home in Gilmerton, Edinburgh.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment, where he was in a stable condition yesterday.

Police are treating the assault as attempted murder.

A source said Bain had just returned to his home in Ravenscroft Street after a night at the pub when he was attacked.

He suffered a suspected punctured lung.

Detective Sergeant Steven Gray said: “Extensive inquiries are ongoing into the attempted murder and officers are currently carrying out inquiries in the local area, and checking CCTV footage to gather more information.

“I would urge anyone who may have been in the area at around the time of the incident and saw anything suspicious to contact us as soon as possible. This is believed to have been an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the general public.”

Jamie, 36, was jailed for at least 22 years for blasting Alex McKinnon, 32, with a sawn-off shotgun and attempting to murder the victim’s brother-inlaw James Hendry, 27, at Edinburgh’s Marmion pub in 2006.

His own son, Jamie jnr, 18, was jailed for four years in 2019 after stabbing a childhood friend outside a supermarket.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting reference number 0385 of Saturday, September 12, or contact Crimestoppers.
