Las: Don’t be star struck like I was
Keith warns about his past Euro hell
KEITH LASLEY has urged his Motherwell men to learn from his mistakes if they want to go a step further than he did on his last Euro outing.
The Fir Park No.2 recalled a first-leg home clash in 2014 against Stjarnan in which he conceded two late penalties to draw 2-2.
He’d ship a third in the first half over in Iceland before Well went on to exit the Europa League second qualifying round in extra-time.
The Lanarkshire side will meet Coleraine, bossed by ex-St Mirren gaffer Oran Kearney, at the same stage in Northern Ireland tomorrow.
And Lasley has warned his side about the danger of being floored by another sucker punch.
He said: “Don’t remind me about that game because I gave away two penalties! I remember that tie vividly for a number of reasons.
“But what I do remember is us being well on top and if European competitions teach you anything, it’s that you have to concentrate.
“We were caught out on a number of times and we thought we were comfortable only to be caught out with a sucker punch. While there are no away goals just now, you still have to be on your guard.”
Lasley believes the battle to progress past Glentoran is reason enough to be wary at The Showgrounds. Well racked up a 5-1 win, which was anything but the breeze the scoreline suggested.
Coleraine stunned Slovenian cracks Maribor and Lasley added: “The determination and tactical analysis they showed was terrific.
If European competition teaches you anything, it’s you have to concentrate KEITH LASLEY ON EURO NIGHTMARE AS A PLAYER
“It’s a message for our players that we need to be ready.
“You don’t go somewhere like that and win on determination alone – you have to be organised and they certainly were.
“It’s a warning shot we have to be at our best to progress.
“It’s a different challenge to Glentoran but what will be similar is the work rate and incessant nature of how they will start.”
