Economist has new life as a woman

- BY RECORD REPORTER

A RESPECTED economist has become one of Scotland’s highest-profile figures to transition from a man to a woman.

Professor Brian Ashcroft, 73, a former director and policy director of the Fraser of Allander Institute, is now known as Elizabeth.

He is married to Wendy Alexander, the former Scottish Labour leader and UK government minister.

In a message to Facebook friends, Ashcroft said: “I have suf fered from gender dysphoria with varying intensity over many years., adding that this had increased in recent years.”

Plans to make it easier for people in Scotland to change gender were delayed this year due to the pandemic.

It would allow trans people to receive a gender recognition certificate after six months.
