Cal: This Guy can be the spark
CALLUM DAVIDSON hopes Israeli striker Guy Melamed can solve St Johnstone’s suffering in front of goal.
The Perth boss has landed the former Maccabi Netanya frontman on a one-year deal and admits his side could do with a cutting edge up top.
Davidson’s men have only scored one goal in seven games and drawn a blank in their last four as they went down to a late defeat by Celtic yesterday.
Melamed, 27, headed to Perth for his medical yesterday. He’s a free agent after tearing up a two-year contract as Maccabi Netanya were in financial difficulty.
The striker has a Lithuanian passport so there are no work permit issues for the man who will add a physical threat for Saints.
Davidson said: “Guy is here and hopefully we can get the paperwork done in time. I looked for someone a little bit different, someone who can bring a spark to the team.
“We’re hoping he can come in, form a good partnership with the other players and score goals for us.
“We can’t let our heads go down, we have to keep reiterating the good performances and trying to change it.
“Getting the first goal is the key, that’s what we need to start doing.”
Davidson’s men put up a good fight against the champs before suffering late heartbreak.
And he added: “It was sore to take because we played to a very high level and we were comfortable.
“Celtic had to bring on five quality subs to win.
“I’m disappointed with the goal because we had a set-piece, that’s three goals in the last two games we’ve lost from that.”
