BA boss goes after its mass cull ‘disgrace’

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT

THE boss of British Airways has stepped down after being slammed for his handling of its staff cull.

The departure of Alex Cruz, 54, comes weeks after Luis Gallego started as chief executive of BA parent company IAG.

He had been under fire over plans announced in April to axe up to 12,000 jobs, blaming Covid-19.

MPs branded the airline a “national disgrace” and unions said BA aimed to “fire and rehire” most of those not axed in the cull.

Nadine Houghton, of the GMB union, branded Cruz “the scapegoat”.

BA has backed down on forcing thousands of staff to sign new contracts.

Cruz stays on as chairman for limited time, and is replaced by Aer Lingus boss Sean Doyle.
