Sick chancer faked illness for cell breaks

- BY JANE HAMILTON Crime Reporter

SERIAL killer Peter Tobin may have used up to 40 aliases to try to hide from the law but there’s one thing he can’t outrun – his health.

Currently suffering from cancer, the 74-year-old has spent much of his prison time in hospital with various complaints – many of them bogus.

He is serving three life sentences for murdering three young women between 1991 and 2006.

He butchered Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, Vicky Hamilton, 15, from Redding, near Falkirk, and Essex schoolgirl Dinah McNicol, 18 – and has been linked to a string of unsolved deaths across Britain.

But he is notorious on the inside as a chancer who has played the system to get an easy ride in jail – until he was diagnosed with a painful form of cancer that has left him in agony on a hospital bed as he fights for life.

He often used to complain of ill-health before court appearances, forcing their postponement, which piled on the agony for his victims’ families.

When he was arrested for the murder of Angelika in 2006 he was in hospital in London under a false name with a fictitious health complaint.

In 2012, he complained of chest pains and was admitted to an

Edinburgh hospital with a suspected heart attack. He was then hospitalised again in 2016 with a suspected stroke.

Prison insiders say when he really did start to be become unwell with cancer symptoms he was in danger of becoming the “boy who cried wolf”.

Criminologist Professor David Wilson believes Tobin makes up his health woes to get a little “holiday” from the misery of prison. He
