We’re not oche with trip to the World Cup
Peter Wright joins Gary Anderson in pulling out of country’s title defence
PETER WRIGHT has joined Gary Anderson in pulling out of Scotland’s World Cup defence.
John Henderson and Robert Thornton have now been handed the task of retaining the title.
Wright and Anderson will not travel abroad due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ruling them both out of defending the trophy they won last year.
Anderson had already said he wouldn’t fly to next month’s event in Germany.
Wright, who is gearing up for tomorrow’s Premier League play- of fs in Coventry, admitted: “I’m not playing either.
“I can understand Gary when he says why he doesn’t travel, getting on a plane and stuff like that. It’s another reason why I’ve pulled out of the two Europeans coming up.
“It’s not because of people not doing their jobs but there are a few idiots breaking the rules and you could pick the virus up.
“Poor Adrian Lewis and Stephen Bunting missing out [on the World Grand
Pri x af t er posi t ive Covid-19 tests]. I think they probably caught that when we were in Germany.
“You’ve got to think of your health and family. If the World Championships are abroad, then we’ll be driving there.
“That’s what we’re going to do for the European finals. Fingers crossed things change quickly.”
Thornton, who competed in three World Cups alongside Anderson, said:
“It’s a shame that Peter and Gary won’t be playing but John and I will be giving it everything to bring the trophy back again.
“I didn’t think I’d get another chance but I’m always proud to represent Scotland and I want to do myself justice.
“To be playing for Scotland again is great, and especially alongside big John. He deserves his chance because he’s played his socks off for years.”
