Area where bomber hid not checked
SECURITY staff were not expected to check an area of Manchester Arena where Salman Abedi hid for nearly an hour before the blast which killed 22 people and injured hundreds of others, an inquiry heard yesterday.
Abedi, 22, headed to the mezzanine level of the City Room foyer – out of sight of CCTV cameras – before he descended the staircase and detonated explosives after an Ariane Grande concert in May 2017.
Super vi sor David Middleton, employed by arena security provider Showsec for 24 years, told Paul Greaney QC, counsel to the inquiry: “That was not our area, that was my understanding.
“We were to keep the steps clear but above the steps was not our domain.”
The inquiry continues.
