Drunk driver in 5am crash at Holyrood

- BY ALAN McEWEN

A SHERIFF told a drunk driver who crashed into anti-terrorism bollards outside the Scottish Parliament was lucky not to be shot by armed cops.

Anthony Oldham, 26, was speeding in a soupedup Vauxhall Vectra just after 5am in June when he lost control and careered into the steel bollards.

Oldham, who was banned from driving at the time, then punched a taxi driver who tried to come to his aid. Police caught him hiding in the grounds of a nearby primary school.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Oldham admitted charges including being drunk at the wheel, dangerous driving and assault. Sheriff Donald Corke said “one could have expected him to be shot” and deferred sentence.
