Supermarket sells beer that started as spoof after row
A BEER that resulted from a social media spat between a supermarket and one of Scotland’s biggest breweries is poised to hit the shelves.
BrewDog’s Ald IPA was created after beer fans noticed similarities between Aldi’s Anti-Establishment beer and BrewDog’s Punk IPA.
The Ellon-based brewery planned to create a “Yaldi IPA”, but it was Aldi’s own suggestion of Ald IPA which BrewDog went for.
Now, what started as a spoof brand is to become BrewDog’s first exclusive creation for a supermarket.
The 4.7 per cent beer, which will cost £1.39 a can, goes on sale today – and the firms will donate a tree for the BrewDog Forest in the highlands for every case sold.
Graham Nicolson, group buying director, Aldi Scotland, said: “With customer enquiries through the roof after the conversation broke on Twitter, it really was a no- brainer to give our shoppers what they want.”
James Watt, co-founder of BrewDog, said: “Ald IPA has been one of our favourite collaborations to date – it’s definitely one no-one saw coming.”
