Norrie won’t be limited to 50 as he motors on

-

CAMERON NORRIE claimed his 50th ATP Tour victory and reached the last eight of the St Petersburg Open by beating Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets.

The British No.4 won 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-3 against the 21-year-old Serbian, who is ranked 34 places higher than Norrie.

Both players earned two breaks in the first set before, at 6-5 up, Norrie secured the decisive break.

Kecmanovic missed the chance to serve out the second set at 5-4 but took his first set point in the tie-break to force a decider.

But his Scottish rival broke in the third game of the final set and secured victory with another break of serve after Kecmanovic had saved three match points.

Norrie remains the only Brit left in the tournament after Dan

Evans was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in the round of 16.

The 25-year-old’s likely quarterfinal opponent is third seed Andrey Rublev. ICE HOCKEY: Elite League chiefs hope a government bailout can help them get back on the ice.

Season 2020/21 was cancelled because of Covid-19, with Scots trio Glasgow Clan, Fife Flyers and Dundee Stars among the 10 sides frozen out. But they have now applied for funding that could see them get back in action again early next year.

League chairman Tony Smith said: “We have seen other sports be awarded grants recently and believe we’ve made the case for professional ice hockey in the UK.

“If sufficient funding were to be available then of course we would look at every option as to how we can organise some form of season in early 2021.”
