BT say no to free-to-air Mersey derby

- BY SIMON BIRD

TV bosses have slapped down demands by MPs that they should show the Mersey derby free to air.

A select committee hearing was united in agreeing that fans of Everton and Liverpool should be given access to the game on Saturday even if they don’t have BT Sports.

The city of Liverpool is in strict lockdown but BT Sports said: “It’s impossible to start applying different commercial models to the many differing and dynamic local lockdown situations.”

The DCMS Select Committee grilled Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden over government policy towards arts and sport. He was asked about the potential for the clash to be shown free because, if not, it may lead to fans gathering at houses other than their own.
