Hit and Mitch gets Cove going

MITCH MEGGINSON scored twice and missed a penalty as Cove began life in League One with a 3-1 win over nineman East Fife.

The skipper sent his spotkick over in 33 minutes before Danny Denholm saw red for sending Megginson airborne.

Before the break the Cove striker netted from close range and grabbed his second just before the hour.

The Fifers replied through loan striker Jack Hamilton but Leighton McIntosh added a third before Aaron Dunsmore copped two late yellows.

Airdrie got off to a winning start by defeating Peterhead 2-0. Kyle Bailey tripped Dale Carrick two minutes from the break and the striker netted the resultant penalty.

The Diamonds sealed their home success when Callum Fordyce nodded in a corner 19 minutes from time.

Falkirk, last season’s runners-up, struck twice late on to win 3-1 at Montrose. C a l l umn Mor r i son’s 85th-minute penalty, after defender Andrew Steeves was dismissed for bringing down Lee Miller, and a stoppageti­me breakaway goal from Robbie Leitch secured victory.

Forfar and Dumbarton played out a goalless draw.
