MARTIN: I AIM TOREPAYRICE

- BY SCOTT BURNS

AARON MARTIN is determined to save Hamilton after they rescued him from his own Covid-19 nightmare.

The big defender, 31, had been without a club since leaving Exeter.

Martin came off a decent campaign and had some interest but reduced budgets left him hanging on over the summer.

At the same time he became a dad – and his wife also lost her job.

Martin looked set to play non-league football to keep fit until Brian Rice came in for him earlier this month.

The stopper said: “We had a boy, Duke, seven months ago at the peak of the virus.

“I hadn’t been paid for four or five months. My wife Louise lost her job at the same time and she’d only just had the baby.

“Everything piled the pressure on with no jobs, a new baby and Lola, my 10-year-old step-daughter.

“I was fortunate enough to have made good money at Southampton and I managed to invest that and it kept us afloat really.

“Because I held out I have managed to get a move to Hamilton and it will allow me to go on and play at a high level again.

“I’m lucky, things could have been very different.”

A good reference from Exeter defender Gary Warren, who worked with Rice at Inverness, helped to seal the deal.

Now Martin is looking forward to his first taste of the Premiership against Dundee United today.

He added: “The first aim is to keep Hamilton in the Premiership. I’ve come here looking to build on last season. I hope I can bring those performances and help Hamilton climb the table.”
