JOE: I’M ONLY ONE WHO’LL TALK TO OFIR

- BY FRASER WILSON

OFIR MARCIANO was given the silent treatment when he returned to Hibs yesterday – two days after helping Israel blow apart Scotland’s Nations League hopes.

But Joe Newell knows that will change if the keeper produces more heroics to help down Celtic today – especially with discussions over a new contract underway.

Marciano was in top form to deny the Scots in midweek and will come up against Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor again at Easter Road.

He’s a free agent next summer and boss Jack Ross has confirmed negotiations over an extension have begun.

But Englishman Newell, who is also in talks over a new deal, revealed he was the only friend Marciano had when he swaggered through the door.

He said: “I’m the only one speaking to Ofir! No one else is talking to him.

“You won’t have been happy with him the other night but he did well.

“He has been brilliant for us though. He has made very important saves at some crucial times this season.

“We spoke about the Rangers game and the double save he made then was phenomenal.

“He has been really good and is a safety net, knowing we have him behind us, because he is a top-class keeper.”

Newell too has emerged as a key man in Ross’ midfield and is keen to extend his stay in Edinburgh himself.

He added: “I’ve said previously I have loved my time here so far and the gaffer’s come in and shown his trust in me. I’ve really enjoyed it.

“Covid has ruined it a bit for me so far and in my 18 months up here I have not really had the chance to experience the city as well as the club, on and off the pitch, because of not having the fans in.

“So, when the conversation comes round, there will be no problems. We will try to get it sorted.”

Hibs are looking to extend an unbeaten home league run against Celtic to six games.

Ross was critical of his side after they lost their last Premiership outing 2-0 at Aberdeen.

But he was delighted with the response in last week’s Betfred Cup win over Dundee.

The Hoops may have wobbled in recent weeks but Ross said: “I’ve the utmost respect for Neil Lennon and his players.

“Our belief we can take something from the game is based on how we feel as a club rather than thinking they have any vulnerability about them.

“It’s not like they’re detached at the top of the table. But we still believe we can cause them problems.”
