THE devastated mum of tragic toddler Julius Czapla is facing her heartache with almost no support due to coronavirus lockdown rules.

Two-year-old Julius was discovered seriously injured by police at Muirhouse Place West in Edinburgh at about 9.30am in the capital on Saturday before being pronounced dead a short time later.

Police are treating his death as suspicious and have charged a man aged 40 in connection with his death.

Close family friend Patrycja Njoroge, 34, has spoken on behalf of Julius’ mum to tell how she has been heartbroken by the ordeal – just a few years after arriving in Edinburgh from her native Poland.

Patrycja told the Daily Record: “His mum is absolutely devastated. Words can’t describe the situation she is facing.

“Julius was her only child. She is struggling to cope and is so heartbroken. He had so much life in him and now it’s just gone.

“You can’t imagine putting yourself in her shoes.”

Patrycja told how the bereft mum, who does not wish to be named at this time, has been left very little contact

with friends and family because of coronavirus restrictions.

She added: “Everyone just wants to help but it is difficult. She has some family members here, but only one friend who can be with her on a daily basis, due to coronavirus lockdown rules, to stay with her and try to look after her.”

The mum moved to Scotland from Poland a few years ago and Patrycja said she has been touched by the outpouring of support from the local community.

Patrycja, who has set up a Gofundme page to help support her friend, said that many have rallied to help the mum with funeral and living costs. She said: “She has so many worries right now. We don’t know when she will be able to have a funeral but we want to help with it.

“It is so difficult to know if she will be even be able to go back to work after this, so we want to at least take the financial burden away. This tragedy has hit all of us and we as friends are finding it difficult to cope with the death, but all we can do is try to help.”

Lucasz Czapla appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday in connection with the death. He made no plea, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.
