Brass-necked Johnson family

He claims EU ties are vital

ONE of the certainties of Brexit is Conservative double standards.

Leaving the EU will make the UK poorer but expect well heeled Tories to look out for their own interests.

Their wealth will be preserved, and expect some Conservative MPs to make a fortune advising clients on the “opportunities” of Brexit.

Stanley Johnson – the Prime Minister’s father – is in a league of his own when it comes to brass necks.

His son was a key player in the dishonest campaign that persuaded UK voters to leave the EU.

He then undermined Theresa May and took her job when he realised his lifelong political ambition could be realised.

And he robbed Britons of their European rights when he took the UK out of the EU, to be replaced by a rotten free trade deal.

But Brexit is unlikely to affect Johnson’s father, as he is going to apply for a French passport. This would provide him with a level of convenience that ordinary people will be denied.

Johnson senior has form for insensitive actions, such as when he announced during the pandemic he would go to the pub if he wanted to.

He also flew to Greece despite guidance warning against non-essential trips.

Brexit has many losers – but members of the shameless Johnson family will not be among them.

BORIS Johnson’s dad said he is applying for a French passport to keep ties with the EU one day after Brexit was sealed.

Stanley Johnson played up his French roots and said it is about “reclaiming what I already have”.

It comes after the Prime Minister pushed the UK out of Europe with a trade deal, ending EU citizenship for millions of ordinary British people.

Stanley Johnson, speaking in French, told RTL radio: “If I understand it correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France, her mother was French as was her grandfather. So, for me, it is about reclaiming what I already have. And that makes me very happy.”

The former I’m a Celeb star added: “I will always be a European. One cannot tell the British people you are not Europeans. Having a tie with the European Union is important.”

The PM’s dad is no stranger to controversy, including when it might prove embarrassing to his family. In the pandemic, he announced he’d go to the pub if he wanted to despite lockdown advice. And he flew to Greece despite guidance to avoid nonessential trips.

The UK quit the EU at the start of the year but as part of a transition period which ended with the bells last night. Under the terms, UK nationals lose the automatic right to work and live all over the EU.

The Scottish Parliament sent a clear signal of opposition Johnson’s plan in a vote on Wednesday.

SNP, Scottish Labour, Lib Dem and Green MSPs voted to refuse “consent” to the Bill linked to the agreement.

The move was symbolic and could not stop the deal described by Nicola Sturgeon as the “worst negotiating outcome in history”.

Meanwhile, it was agreed yesterday that Gibraltar’s border with Spain will remain open following the end of the Brexit transition period after the UK and EU agreed a draft deal.

Johnson said: “I welcome today’s political agreement between the UK and Spain on Gibraltar’s future relationship with the EU.

“The UK has always been, and will remain, totally committed to the protection of the interests of Gibraltar and its British sovereignty.”
